Following the suicide of 26-year-old chartered accountant Anna Sebastian Perayil, there has been a nationwide discussion about hazardous work cultures. Tarun Saxena’s letter criticizing his top management and his own suicide come during this time.

Anita Augustine, Anna’s mother, wrote a letter earlier this month that caused a great deal of controversy on social media. Her daughter passed away four months after joining the company, and she written a letter to Rajiv Memani, chairman of Ernst & Young India, pleading with the leadership to change a work culture that “seems to glorify overwork while neglecting the very human being behind the role”. Even on the weekends, she noted, Anna worked long hours “with no opportunity to catch her breath”.

The chairman of EY India stated that he was aware of comments made on social media regarding several of the company’s work procedures. “I want to reaffirm that our people’s welfare is my first concern and that I will personally work for this goal. He stated in a LinkedIn article, “I am fully dedicated to fostering a harmonious workplace, and I will not stop until that goal is achieved. The Union Labour Ministry has opened an investigation into the reasons for Anit Augustine’s daughter’s delay in the midst of the controversy surrounding her letter.
