Jay Shah, The secretary of BCCI is going to be the new ICC chairman. The current chairman, Greg Barclay, has already said he will leave his job when his time is up in November.
Jay shah will be ICC Chairman
Jay Shah, the secretary of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), is going to take over from Greg Barclay as the new chairman of the International Cricket Council (ICC). Barclay told other ICC directors, including Mike Baird from Cricket Australia, that he does not want to run for the job again. He made this decision after learning that Jay Shah wants to take his place in November. Jay Shah has support from cricket boards in England and Australia, so he has enough votes to become the head of the ICC.
Jay Shah is son of India’s home minister, Amit Shah. The only four Indians to have led the ICC previously are Jagmohan Dalmiya (1997–2000), Sharad Pawar (2010–2012), N Srinivasan (2014–2015), and Shashank Manohar (2015–2020), in their capacities as chairmen. When Jay Shah formally succeeds Barclay in November, he will become the third person to do so.
ICC Chair Greg Barclay informed the board that, upon the expiration of his present term at the end of November, he will not seek re election. An ICC spokeswoman told that Barclay was appointed as the independent ICC chair in November 2020 and then re-elected in 2022.
“Current directors are now required to put forward nominations for the next chair by 27 August 2024 and if there is more than one candidate, an election will be held with the term of the new chair commencing on 1 December 2024.”The chairman will be chosen by a simple majority of nine votes (51%) as per ICC rules. The election will consist of sixteen ballots. In the past, the incumbent required a two-thirds majority to hold the position of chairman.
The majority of the 16 voting members hold a favorable opinion of him. Jay Shah will serve as BCCI secretary for a more year, after which he will be required to take a three-year hiatus starting in October 2025.
A Supreme Court-approved BCCI constitution states that an office bearer may hold office for six years before having to take a three-year cooling-off period. An individual may hold office for a total of eighteen years, nine in a state association and nine in the BCCI. Jay Shah will have four years remaining in the BCCI if he chooses to go to the ICC with one year remaining in his secretaryship.
Jay shah will be the 35th chairman in ICC history to hold the position. he will also become the youngest chairman in the history of ICC.
