Bharatia janata party(BJP) has called for a 12 Hours strike in West Bengal on Wednesday, from 6am to 6pm.to protest against police acton on protester of march to state secretariat Nabanna on Tuesday over Kolkata rape-murder case. The ruling TMC accused the BJP of fomenting disturbances in the state and urged people not to participate in the strike in West Bengal.
Suvendu Adhikari,the leader of opposition in the west Bengal Assembly, accused the police resorting to ”brutal repression”on peaceful protesters of the ‘Nabanna Abhijan’ rally.
The state government, led by chief minister Mamata Banarjee, has vowed to ensure the normal life remains unaffected during the strike in West Bengal.

Alapan Bandopadhya, the chief advisor to the Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee., said ”The government will not allow any strike in West Bengal on Wednesday. We urge people not to participate in in All steps shall be taken to ensure that normal life is on affected.” He also mentioned that transport service will operate as usual, and shops, marketplace, and other business establishment have asked to remain open. State government employees also been urge to attend office. The educational institution will also remains open in the state, as per the government.
Kolkata doctor rape murder case
On 9 August 2024, Moumita Debnath, a trainee doctor at RG Kar Medical College in Kolkata, West Bengal, India, was raped and murdered in a college building. Her body was found in a seminar room on campus. The incident has amplified debate about the safety of women and doctors in India, and has sparked significant outrage, nationwide and international protests, and demands for a thorough investigation.
On the night of 8 August 2024, Debnath had dinner with her colleagues and retired in a seminar hall after a 36-hour shift in the hospital. At about 9:30 IST the following morning, her body was discovered in the seminar hall in a semi-nude state with her eyes, mouth, and genitals bleeding. She was later declared dead. College authorities initially informed her family that she had committed suicide.

“Nabanna Abhijan” becomes violent as protesters fight with police. Police used batons and tear gas shells to remove the group that marched to the state secretariat ‘Nabanna’, demanding the resignation of Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee over the RG Kar Medical College rape-murder case.
Protesters fought with police in Howrah and Kolkata on Tuesday afternoon during the ‘Nabanna Abhijan’ march, which was held to condemn the rape and death of a young woman doctor at R G Kar Medical College.
As protesters marched to the West Bengal secretariat, urging the resignation of Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee for the rape and murder of the junior doctor at the state-run hospital, and thrown stones, the police used batons, fired tear gas shells, and water cannons to disperse the crowd of protesters.
Numerous protesters were arrested by police, despite the fact that both sides were injured in violence during the “Nabanna Abhijan”, which was organized by a little-known students’ organization named Paschim Banga Chhatra Samaj (Society of Students in West Bengal), and which police considered as illegal.
The police erected barricades reinforced with forged iron rods ahead of the rally. The Kolkata police placed a huge cargo container near Hastings, one of the approach ways towards Nabanna, to block protesters, while Rapid Action Force (RAF) personnel and other security guards in riot gear were pressed into action.
Around 1 p.m., the march began in several sections of Howrah and Kolkata, with protesters carrying the national flag and shouting anti-government slogans heading towards the state secretariat
Clashes went out initially in Santragachi, Howrah, when agitators broke through one of the barricades and police used batons on protestors while firing tear gas and water cannons. Scores of protesters then stormed the Santragachi Railway Station, throwing stones at the police.
Stone pelting was also recorded on the Kona Expressway, Foreshore Road in Howrah, and near the landmark Howrah Bridge, where police and protesters battled.
On the Kolkata side, protesters tried to break through the barricade unsuccessfully on the approach way to Vidyasagar Setu, popularly known as Second Hooghly Bridge, while shouting slogans against the government and Mamata Banerjee.
