After meeting with the protesting doctors of RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, late at night, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee announced the removal of Vineet Goyal.

RG Kar Medical College Junior doctors, who have been protesting since a doctor was raped and murdered at Kolkata’s RG Kar Medical College and Hospital last month, are expected to call off their 38-day strike on Tuesday afternoon after the government fulfills its promise to remove police commissioner Vineet Kumar Goyal and two health officials.

Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee made the guarantee late night on Monday after 42 junior doctors met with her for around six hours and requested the removal of the state health secretary, directors of health services, and medical education.

Sanjay Roy was arrested for rape and murder on August 10, despite allegations that police tampered with evidence and shielded the guilty.

Who will be the next police commissioner of Kolkata ?

Manoj Kumar Verma was named as the next commissioner of Kolkata Police by West Bengal’s Mamata Banerjee government on Tuesday. Before his latest appointment, Mr. Verma, a 1998 batch IPS officer, was the assistant director general (ADG) of law and order for West Bengal.

Manoj Kumar Verma succeeds Vineet Kumar Goyal, who has been appointed additional director general (ADG) of the Special Task Force.

Goyal, a 1994 batch IPS officer, came under controversy for his handling of the rape and murder of a 31-year-old postgraduate trainee doctor on August 9 at the state-run RG Kar Medical College Hospital. Goyal succeeded Soumen Mittra as Kolkata’s top cop in 2021. He completed his study in IIT Kharagpur and IIT Kanpur and worked in the Kolkata Police Department in a variety of positions.Goyal also held the positions of joint commissioner of police for the Special Task Force and Traffic, as well as additional commissioner of police.

Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee announced the decision to remove Goyal after a late-night meeting with the protesting doctors. Mamata Banerjee requested doctors to return to work because most of their demands have been fulfilled.

Mamata Banerjee also stated, “There will be no punitive action against the doctors…”. “I would like to request that they return to work because ordinary people are suffering.”
