DRDO (Defence Research and Development Organisation) announced that the 25-ton tank’s preliminary field testing, which demonstrated remarkable performance, had been completed successfully.
The first vehicle and field fire testing of the national “Zorawar” light tank have now taken place in the desert. The tank was developed for use in high-altitude battle in areas such as eastern Ladakh and Arunachal Pradesh during the war with China.
The army’s stand against Chinese soldiers along the disputed Line of Actual Control (LAC) is likely to be strengthened by the tank when it is prepared for deployment into service in 2027.
At the Mahajan firing range near Bikaner on Friday, India’s new light tank Zorawar which is designed for quick deployment and high mobility in the mountains fired for the first time. The Defence Research and Development Organization (DRDO) announced that it had completed the 25-ton tank’s first field trials with remarkable results.

The DRDO(Defence Research and Development Organisation) also stated “Many Indian industries, including micro, small, and medium-sized enterprises (MSMEs), demonstrated indigenous defense manufacturing capabilities by contributing to the development of various sub-systems”.
Rajnath Singh, the minister of defence, welcomed the innovation as an important step towards India’s goal of being independent in critical defence technology and systems.
Under Project “Zorawar” India’s latest light tank, (Defence Research and Development Organisation) DRDO and (Larsen & Toubro) L&T collaborated to create the tank in order to fulfill the Indian Army’s need for 354 light tanks. In two years, it was entirely created from the ground up. On July 6, when the tank’s first prototype was shown at L&T’s Hazira factory in Gujarat, DRDO chief Samir V Kamat examined it.
The 105mm gun on the tank fired smoothly. The next round of testing will include shooting missiles. DRDO expects to finish a number of trials by January 2025, at after which the tank will be made available to the army for comprehensively user testing.
Before the tank is put into production, the army will test it in the summer, winter, and at high altitudes. This might mean that the user trials take 12 to 18 months.
